An unusual pairing—a guillotine and a grand piano—is featured on the cover of the Summer 1977 issue of The Paris Review. Showcasing the artist William N. Copley’s poetic wit, this image––one of his signature motifs––finds a new iteration in the Copley Tote, made in collaboration with the artist’s estate. A self-taught artist who was deeply influenced by the surrealists, Copley (1919–1996) became well-known as a provocative painter who explored eroticism, humor, and social critique. This careful reproduction retains the detail of the artist’s drawing for the cover of the Review, originally executed in ink.
