Jennifer Bartlett (1941–2022) is best known for her works of major scale—room-size installations such as Rhapsody, a polyptych composed of nearly one thousand painted steel panels. While Cats, her drawing for the Spring 1984 cover of the Review, is more modest in size, it exceeds its frame by way of its multiplying feline subjects, who wander on and off the page.
